Chapter Eight

Christian shifted, hoping it would encourage Evan to do the same. His skin rippled over his lion body, and he tilted his chin, his mane hanging straight and long. He turned, expecting to see Evan standing there in human form, but the sight of him as a lion threw him for a second or two.

“I did it.” Evan gave a low growl and shook his head. “But this fucking beard, man!”

If Christian could have laughed, he would. Instead, he showed his teeth and bobbed his head. “Maybe you’ll never get used to it. You were fine with it before. Said it made you feel all manly.”

“Manly! It makes me feel like a wizened old man.”

“Aww, get over your damn self.”

Christian ran before Evan could throw a comeback at him. He sniffed as he went, entering the forest from where Vann had come out. The scent of wolf was strong, as though Vann’s and Kip’s essences still hung in the air, refusing to leave, wanting to remain there to remind Christian that this was wolf, not lion, land.

“We’ll run until I’m satisfied I’ve found somewhere totally secluded,” Christian said. “And it’ll give you a chance to practice being vigilant. Much as running in lion form is exhilarating, you need to relearn the skill of remaining alert at all times.” He glanced over his shoulder to make sure Evan was in pursuit. “At Oakland, we could run without having to worry so much, but here is different. Until we get to know the area better, anyway.”

“I came through here when I first arrived,” Evan said. “A bit farther on to the right is the main road. But I have no clue what’s to the left.”

“I’ll go that way then. Watch my back, all right?”

“You got it.”

Christian ran on, pounding his paws on the forest floor, his instinct taking him into a thick stand of pines. The trunks were close together here, and the lower branches of the leafy canopy a few meters above them blocked out all but small dots of sky. He came to a halt and, panting heavily, scented the air. No wolf had come this way in quite some time, it seemed. Or any fulls.

He turned as Evan padded up to him and stopped a couple of meters away. God, his mate was a beautiful animal. While Christian’s fur bordered on burnt orange, Evan was similar to caramel tinged cream. In certain lighting he appeared white, but not among the murky shadows created by the cover of pines. As a lion, Evan’s eyes were turquoise, so pretty and bright, and he always appeared vulnerable, the shape of his animal eyes somehow making him look sad. A chastised cat after being caught licking butter left out on the counter.

Christian felt a stirring of desire so he shifted quickly, rolling his shoulders to work out the kinks. He watched Evan shift—his mate did it so effortlessly now—and held his breath. As they stood staring at one another in human form,
